Selecting the right press tonnage is one of the most critical decisions when setting up a pickleball paddle production line. Too little force leads to incomplete consolidation and delamination; too much adds unnecessary cost and can damage molds.
Understanding Press Tonnage
Press tonnage refers to the maximum closing force a hot press can apply, measured in metric tons (T). For pickleball paddle production, the required tonnage depends on three main factors: (1) the projected area of the paddle mold, (2) the specific pressure required by your prepreg material system, and (3) the number of cavities in your mold.
A standard pickleball paddle has a projected area of approximately 0.028 square meters (280 cm2). Most epoxy prepreg systems require 3-5 MPa of consolidation pressure. Single-cavity molds therefore need only 8-14 tons of force — well within the CP-500 or CP-BALL range.
Multi-Cavity Production
As production volumes increase, multi-cavity molds become essential. A 4-cavity mold for pickleball paddles requires approximately 45-55 tons of force, making the CP-BALL with its 50T capacity and custom platen design the ideal choice.
For manufacturers producing multiple paddle models simultaneously, the CP-1000 (100T) provides flexibility. Its larger platen (1000x1000mm) accommodates up to 9 standard pickleball paddle cavities. The key trade-off is cycle time versus mold complexity.
Temperature Control Matters
Tonnage alone does not guarantee quality. Temperature uniformity across the platen is equally important. CarbonForce presses feature multi-zone independent temperature control ensuring every paddle in a multi-cavity mold receives identical thermal treatment.
We recommend starting with a single-cavity mold on the CP-500 for process development, then scaling to multi-cavity production on the CP-BALL. This approach minimizes risk and allows you to optimize cycle parameters before committing to high-volume tooling.
Recommendations Summary
For startups and R&D: CP-500 (50T) with single-cavity mold. For production volumes of 500-1,500 paddles/day: CP-BALL (50T) with 4-cavity mold. For 2,000+ paddles/day across multiple models: CP-1000 (100T) with multi-cavity setup. Contact our engineering team for a detailed analysis of your specific production requirements.
